Check out some top shots from Saturday’s action at the Elizabeth City LL Qualifier in North Carolina.
Report submitted by Billy Rainford of MXRanking.com.
The season got underway this past weekend up in the Northeast with the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier at the Area 51 track in Batavia, NY. The track sits on the north side of I-90 just 30 miles east of Buffalo. Spring took its time getting here this year, but the weather was finally perfect for two solid days of intense racing on the track that was hosting its firs LL Qualifier. There was a good turnout with lots of different classes to run which took the days late into the afternoon. Here is how some of the action went:
#84 Tanner Ward had a strong weekend on his Cobras winning the 65 (10-11) class and finishing second to #524 Jacob Beaudoin in the 65 (7-11) class. He also raced in the 85 (9-11) Mod class and grabbed a third place overall on a borrowed Yamaha.
#41 Sylvain Brodeur took his KTM 350 to second place in the +40C class and 8th in the Vet +35 class. His daughter, Eve, finished well in her classes getting 4th in the girls (9-15) and 8th in 85 (9-11) Mod.
#323 is Anthony Sabourin. He battled up at the front in his races all weekend. He grabbed the win in the Open Novice and 450 C and got 6th in the Collegeboy (14-24).
#78/178 Westen Wrozyna had one of those weekends we all dream about. He was ‘the man to beat’ in all of his classes, going undefeated in the 85 (12-14) Mod, Open Mini (10-16), and Supermini 2 (13-16).
New MXRanking member, Myles Bartholomew, was pretty happy with the way his weekend went. He finished 5th in 250B Stock and Collegeboy (14-24) B/C.
Scott Sheak showed up and showed the 35+ class how it’s done. He also placed 8th overall in the 450 A class with 10-8 finishes.
Pennsylvania’s Ben Ritter proved that the 2-stroke can still be a threat by pulling a couple holeshots and winning the 450 A class. He went 5-5 for 5th on the 250 A class and took 3rd in the Open Pro Sport.
You’d be surprised at how often things like this happen with the big Buick Electra Wagon. I wasn’t there 30 seconds and someone asked how much it would take for me to sell it! This kid got $1 for kissing Carmen on the lips.
See you at the races…

The final day of Loretta Lynn area qualifying at Elizabeth City MX in Elizabeth City, North Carolina completed this past Sunday and MXPTV got photos of the exciting first motos that took place. Check out the brief photo report below and over 290 photos from the first motos at the Smugmug link below!
The start at Elizabeth City has to be one of the longest starts in country. With pure sand laying the way to the first sweeping right hand turn, you know that everyone’s bike was max’d out at least 4th gear into the corner. Here’s the start of the 1st 250 C Modified moto getting around the first bend, which isn’t even half way down the start.
Jamal Porter leads the start of the 1st 250 A moto of the day ahead of local pro Nick Hayes and the rest of the pack. See, the two stroke can still get it done!
Seth Rarick had a very successful Saturday winning 3 of his 4 motos. On Sunday, he was still up front but didn’t pull in as many wins. Still, Rarick has stepped it up for 2011 after battling with a long list of injuries.
MXPTV asked some 85cc (9-11) riders who was the rider to beat in their classes at Elizabeth City. Who was it? It was this fast kid, Justin Dunn. Dunn looked solid all weekend long at ECMX.
Keeping Justin Dunn honest in the (9-11) classes was River Hancock. He was on the gas all weekend long as well at ECMX.
The most exciting moto of the weekend had to be the 1st Schoolboy 2 moto. Cooper Webb lead the way on his Honda CRF250 as Paul Coats (777) and Nick Ferrell (14) were close behind.
As the Schoolboy 2 riders headed into the main portion of the track, Nick Ferrell went down in this corner and moved up the rest of the pack to follow close to Webb, including the very fast Joey Savatgy (176).
Once the 2nd lap was under way, Cooper Webb had Joey Savatgy on his rear for the first half of the moto.
Joey Savatgy kept gaining small ground on Cooper Webb throughout the 1st Schoolboy 2 moto at ECMX.
Joey Savatgy would end up getting by Cooper Webb midway through the moto but Webb did not give up a bit as he stayed on Savatgy throughout the moto. But in the final corner, Savatgy got held up with a lapper and Webb got by to take the moto win. Webb would sweep the Schoolboy 2 class as Savatgy stayed 2nd and it also showed that Webb is a serious threat on the 250f machines after years on the 150s.
Shooting at sand tracks like Elizabeth City is always intense. Racing it, however, has its drawbacks like this sandblasted shot here.
MTF’s Bryan Johnson cleaned house in the Junior 25 Plus class at Elizabeth City.
Josh Strickland leads Justin Rodbell in the 1st 65cc (7-11) Modified moto. Rodbell would get by and win the moto and the overall later in the day with a 1-1 sweep.
Justin Rodbell’s moto wins didn’t come easy as both Josh Strickland and Devin Kusmider were hounding the #58 machine each 65cc (7-11) Modified moto.
Paul Coates (777) and Joey Savatgy (176) lead the way for the 1st 250 B Modified moto at ECMX.
As Joey Savatgy went for the check out, the battle for 2nd was intense as Clout (192), Paul Coates (777), and Zach Bell (100) went at it.
After a mid pack start, Zach Bell came through the field on a mission as he got by Coates and Clout for 2nd in the moto.
Open A/Pro Sport – Moto 1 saw Nick Hayes grab the star over ECMX’s anthill with Josh Hall (125) and Bryan Johson (75) not far behind.
Josh Hall (125) and Seth Rarick (612) battle it out for 2nd during the Open A/Pro Sport 1st moto at ECMX. Rarick would get by and catch up to the race leader, Nick Hayes.
As Rarick was gaining time on Hayes, the 2 riders got together as lines crossed in a fast, wide corner in the back section. Both riders went down and the lead went to Josh Hall.
Josh Hall would inherit the lead after Rarick and Hayes got together. But Britt (421) was hard charging to the checkers as Hall held him off for the moto win.
That will do it from Elizabeth City! Thanks for checking out MXPTV!
After a full day of open practice on Friday and a short morning practice session earlier today, it was time to start racing at Elizabeth City and kick off the 2011 Loretta Lynn’s program. Check out the photos below and captions to capture the highlights of the day. Click the Smugmug link below this photo report to check out over 300 photos from the racing action at ECMX!
Super Mini 1 (12-15) Moto 1 saw Cooper Webb (175), Cameron Dowell (726), and Tyler Kirschner (244) lead the way early down the long, start straight at Elizabeth City.
Jacob Knable leads the way down the start straight during a 250 B Stock division moto.
Zach Bell gets a huge start during the 1st 250 B Stock division moto over Joey Savatgy (176) and the rest of the pack.
While running 2nd close behind Savatgy, Zach Bell went down in one corner early in the moto.
Joey Savatgy was unstoppable all day long. He never saw 2nd each time he went across the stripe each lap.
After his fall in the corner, Zach Bell charged on despite his clutch level dangling in the wind as he worked his way through the pack.
Tisdale (210) and Merrill (173) battle it out in the 1st 250 A moto at Elizabeth City.
Jimmy Weinert Training Facility/South of the Border rider Seth Rarick won 3 out of his 4 A class motos at Elizabeth City on Saturday. He was on fire today and plans to continue it into Sunday.
Rodbell was the top rider in the 51cc (4-6) Shaft Drive class on Saturday at Elizabeth City.
Paul Coates (75) and Dakota Alix (37) battle it out in the 1st Schoolboy 1 moto at Elizabeth City.
Cooper Webb was in the top 5 each of the motos today in the Schoolboy 1 class at Elizabeth City.
Jesse Pierce ran the MXPTV Helmet Cam in the 1st Schoolboy 1 moto and after taking the winter off with racing, he got a solid 2nd place in the 1st moto.
However, Jesse Pierce had company all moto long with Kuykendall (321) and Webb (175) but held them off by the checkers.
450 A 1st moto saw Seth Rarick holds off and pulls away from local pro Nick Hayes. Rarick would take the 450 A overall win.
Johnny Wasco was another rider running the MXPTV Helmet Cam today at Elizabeth City. A 4th in 450 A and 14th in 250 A is how he finished today at ECMX.
One 50cc rider takes super good care of his Cobra in between motos at Elizabeth City.
Mostly everyone had their fair share of sandblasted moments today at ECMX.
Zach Bell lays it over in one corner during the 2nd 250 B Stock moto at ECMX.
The big battle of the day was between Joey Savatgy and Zach Bell in the 2nd 250 B Stock moto. Savatgy lead the entire way but Bell was inching closer and closer to Savatgy each lap showing impressive speed on his Kawasaki KX250F. It definitely shows that Bell is transferring well to the big bikes after years on the mini bikes.
Dakota Alix topped the Schoolboy 1 class pretty easily today at ECMX.
Maryland’s Darius Glover competed in his first Loretta Lynn area qualifier today in a non-qualifying 125-450cc class today at ECMX. Glover had a rough time on the sandy track after falling a number of times each moto. But he kept going and finished each moto as the crowd applauded his efforts.
