Have you heard about Primal X? They’re a crew of guys who craft up some sweet custom graphics for practically anything with a motor. We’re talkin’ Dirt, Street, Snow and Water; we’ve been seeing it all over the scene so we figured we’d take a few minutes to meet up with Designer Marcus Jones from Primal X to see what the buzz is all about.

A little background of Marcus and Primal X…he lives motocross and it’s purely obvious when you look at his credentials, starting out in the early 90’s with a clapped-out ‘89 Honda CR80 and since then he’s been obsessed with anything that goes fast.  Now sporting a blacked out CRF450R, he rides as much as humanly possible…when he’s not creating new designs for the Primal X riders.

Marcus has a really chill persona about him and you’ll often find him in the shop with a Corona in one hand and a wrench in the other. He just does his own thing and that’s reflected in his work.

Marcus hails from Ohio and decided he should join up with his brother Mike who had started Primal X in 1995 selling and servicing motorcycles…and that formula was a winner. Together Marcus, Mike and now brother Rueben been successful in moving Primal X into the limelight and they’re picking up speed heading into 2013.

So what is Primal X all about? Is there a core philosophy behind the workings of the company?

MJ: That’s not a simple question to answer, so let me give it to you like this; if you look at a motocross starting gate, most riders line up and they’ve got this look of uncertainty, insecurity, nervousness and fear…we’ve all seen that look right?

Now look further down the line and you’ll find that one rider who’s staring down the gate, cool, calm and collected…because he or she knows they’re “Alpha”. That’s our value set here at Primal X.

Let’s talk motocross…what are your influences?

MJ: My brothers and I’ve always been about racing cars, 80’s hair metal and riding motocross. Like many riders, we grew up watching guys like Doug Henry, Ricky Johnson and Jeremy McGrath and they really set the tone. So, we’ve tried to keep that flavor of swagger alive…

When we were younger our parents wouldn’t let us ride motorcycles…yeah right?  So when they would leave for work we’d sneak to a friend’s farm to ride his bikes and we’ve been riding ever since.

Who is the team at Primal X?

MJ: We run a pretty tight ship here. Big Mike Jones runs Sales and Service, Reuben is our Marketing Manager and I oversee all Design & Print related material.  

That’s the core Primal X group that gets it done and in addition we also have a crew that takes care of customer service related issues and rider support.

What is your most popular product?

MJ: Semi-custom graphic kits are our bread and butter for sure and the custom Oakley sunglasses decal kits are flying out of here and they’ve proved to be one of our most popular products. But because we can do full-on custom work, most customers are only limited by their imaginations, and that’s where we come in, we can help you define your unique style.

What other types of graphics does Primal X offer riders?

MJ: We do it all! We have graphics kits available for MX, ATV, Snow, Street and Water Sports.  We also offer various personal ID kits for items such as neck braces, wheel wraps, hubs and jerseys so you can look your best at all times.

In terms of graphics in general, just take a look at our designs compared to our competitors, we feel you’ll get a sense of familiarity but also one of originality, we believe you are unique and your graphics should reflect your swagger.

We don’t look at what others are doing in the industry because to be honest we don’t care what our competitors are producing. We feel like it’s all the same…and that just not what we’re about.

What other industry partners do you have at the moment?

MJ: Recently we’ve expanded our professional relationships and I’d like to give a shout out to Ken at MotorsportsTube.com, Joe at MxSimPits.com, Charles at Two-Stroke Motocross, Sean at MXNewsFeed.com, Chris and Adam at Race Factory Gaming, Andrew at Tilt-A-Rack and Devon at 1SevenFilms, they’ve all been a great help in helping us move forward.

What’s in the pipeline in terms of new product(s)?

MJ: We’ve got a lot of new items to expand our product line heading into 2013, and our new lids dropped last week and they look pretty fresh.  We have a new “My First Word Was BRAAP!!” T-shirt that’s been incredibly popular as well.

Does Primal X sponsor any riders?

MJ: Absolutely. We’ve got a solid group of guys in the MX/ATV scenes including Darius Glover, Jeremy Wendelken, Augie Lieber, Johnny Wasco, Dale Kump, Jamal Porter and Tyler Barnes.
