Last weekend, MXPTV visited the Hurricane Hills Sports Center in Clifford, Pennsylvania to check out round 2 of the 2011 Northeast Classic and Xtreme Motocross Series.  As I arrived at the track Saturday afternoon, the facility was being blown around with heavy winds and rain that came in sideways that had been happening throughout the day.  I didn’t even want to get out of my vehicle!  It was that bad!  Despite the inclement weather the day before, the track was draining out as planned and when practice started up (after a brief delayed start), the Hurricane Hills track was not in bad shape at all!  Additional grooming by Hurricane Hills’ Joe Fritz and crew made the track much more ridable after practice and dust started to appear half way through the 1st set of motos.  And with the whole “April Showers” theme going on, the Hurricane sprouted some top riders from the day that stood out.  Check them out below.
Fresh from spending the time riding and training in Georgia this past Winter, Rock River Yamaha’s Luke Renzland was the one to beat in the A classes at Hurricane Hills. Â Renzland, who is also fresh into the A class for 2011 after a successful 2010 that included a Loretta Lynn’s title in Schoolboy 1, was on the gas all day long grabbing dual moto sweeps in the 250 A and Open A classes. Â Older brother Kody Renzland faired out well in the A classes as well grabbing a 2-4 for 3rd overall in 250 A and a 5-6 for 5th overall in Open A.
After making a couple of night shows in the Supercross class the past couple of months, New Yorker Mike Stryker has stepped it up for 2011 and his speed showed at Hurricane Hills. Â Still aboard a KTM 450, Stryker held the lead in Open A numerous times due to great starts just before Renzland got around for the moto wins. Â In 250 A, Stryker was slightly underpowered as he was on a KTM 125 and finished 5th overall with a 4-5 finish. Â Stryker is planning to do the entire outdoor national series this summer in the 450 class. Â (BTW, check out StrykeDaddy Inc. on Facebook!)
Pennsylvanian Schae Thomas made our last Top Riders list at Raceway Park a couple of weeks ago. Â Thomas deserves it once again with great rides at his home track at Hurricane Hills. Â Thomas went swept the 85 (9-13) and 85 (12-15) classes with ease. Â Once again, keep your eye out for the #14 Suzuki!
New Yorker Tyler Loud is a regular at Hurricane Hills and his continual refusal of not going to the 4 stroke sure gets people looking at him when he passes by. Â Truly living up to his last name, Loud screamed his Yamaha YZ125 to a 2-2 finish behind Kevin Tompkins in the 125 2 Stroke class. Â Despite have some mid race bike problems in Open B, Loud took his Yamaha YZ250 to a 1-1 sweep in the class as the sold 2 stroke. Â It’s always good to see the 2 stroke still humming away at the track!
Pennsylvanian Doug Miller has always been fast at Hurricane Hills. Â Two overall sweeps in Collegeboy 14-24 and 250 B and a 2-2 Â for 2nd overall in Open B showed that Miller was on his game at the Hurricane.
Kevin Tompkins, who is another Hurricane Hills regular, was undefeated all day long and won the most motos on the day with full moto sweeps in Schoolboy 1, 125 2 Stroke, and Schoolboy 2 classes. Â Tompkins had Kyle Dillin, Zach Putnam, Tyler Loud, and others to fend off to get the moto wins at the Hurricane. Â Tompkins is always fast at Hurricane Hills and wherever he goes as well!
New Jersey’s Frank Eckel has switched to blue for 2011 and loves his Yamaha YZ450. Â With a 1-1 sweep in +25 A and the closest to keep up with the legend himself, Barry Carsten, Eckel looked pretty darn good as well on that Yamaha!
New Jersey’s Devin Kusmider owned the 65 (10-11) and 85 (9-11) classes at Hurricane Hills in regular fashion once again. Â Kusmider is becoming one of the top riders in his class in the region as well as giving those top national riders fits every once and awhile. Â Kusmider also followed up with a 2-2 finish in the 85 (9-13) class behind the fast Schae Thomas.
