The 30th year of amateur motocross championship racing is in the books at Loretta Lynn’s and it’s time to take a look back at the riders that truly shined at the ranch the past week.
Star Racing/Yamaha’s new recruit Kyle Peters had an up and down week at Loretta’s. Â A gnarly wreck near the Red Bull skyscraper early in the week wasn’t the way he wanted to start the week but he turned it around and came away with a #1 plate topping A class favorite Justin Bogle in the final 250 A moto on Saturday. Â The two riders were tied 1-2 and 2-1 going into the final moto. Â Peters had the start and Bogle was right behind but was never able to get around for the moto and eventually, the championship. Â Peters will be aiming for his first pro national this weekend at Unadilla.
Talk about making a comeback. Â Team Green Kawasaki’s top rider and recently signed Pro Circuit rider Adam Cianciarulo had a year he would rather forget at the ranch last year. Â For this year, it was all about redemption and showing everyone he’s still the top name out there. Â Cianciarulo scored top 3 finishes in every moto to solidify 2 championships in the Super Mini 1 and 2 classes. Â AC also won the AMA Award for top youth of the week at Loretta’s.
Rockstar/PR2 Suzuki rider Jordon Smith may not have won a title this week but his speed, endurance, and stamina had to top every rider out at the ranch last week. Â Smith tailed Cianciarulo all week long as it simply came down to bad starts for Smith. Â AC had his starts down all week while Smith struggled with midpack starts that left him passing riders all week. Â Smith would always catch up to AC but not enough time was on the clock to actually see the 2 battle.
Amsoil/Factory Connection’s next prospect Justin Bogle had the target on his back all week long as the A rider to watch (or beat) at Loretta Lynn’s. Â Bogle sweeped the 450 A class and after an epic battle with Kyle Peters in the final 250 A moto, Bogle goes 2-1-2 for 2nd overall. Â Also, Bogle was presented the AMA Horizon Award for the top A rider at Loretta’s. Â Bogle will also be making his pro debut this weekend at Unadilla.
Team Green Kawasaki’s Clark Stiles was on a roll this year at Loretta’s after just missing out on titles on the Vet classes in past years. Â Stiles won 4 out of 6 motos and finished 2nd in the other 2 motos to grab to 2 titles in Junior 25 Plus and Vet 35 Plus. Â With names like James Evans, Keith Johnson, Michael Sleeter, Casey Clark, Scott Sheak, and Jimmy Povolny to line up against, it was no easy task for the Alabama Slammer to grab these 2 titles. Â Stiles also won the AMA Award for top Vet rider of the week at Loretta’s.
Team Green Kawasaki’s Justin Hill hasn’t had the greatest of Loretta Lynn’s appearances in the past but this year, Hill stepped up his game by a lot and took the 250 B Stock championship. Â Add on a 6th place ride in Schoolboy 2 and having one of the fastest lap times all week long, it was overall solid week for Josh’s younger brother.
Canada native Cole Thompson has been an underrated rider the past few years as he has always been up front in his class but never seems to get the recognition. Â At Loretta’s, Thompson took his Honda to a championship win in the 450 B Stock class with a 1-1-2 tally and 3rd overall in 250 B Stock.
Cobra’s Stilez Robertson now has 2 Loretta Lynn titles at only 9 years old! Â Robertson swept the 51cc 7-8 class with almost ease all week long. Â How will Roberston transition from the 50s to the 65s? Â Time will only tell.
KTM rider Gabriel Jairala may not be a familiar name but winning 2 titles at Loretta Lynn’s last week sure will get some attention out there in the motocross world. Â Jairala took the 65 (10-11) Stock and 65 (7-11) Modified class championships. Â Jairala wasn’t as dominant as the riders in this list as out of 6 motos, he only won 1 moto, but at Loretta’s, consistency is what pays off in the end and finishing top 3 every moto does help out!
Yamaha/Red Bull athlete Matt Bisceglia has been so close to grabbing a title at Loretta Lynn’s in past years. Â Last year, Bisceglia was so close to a title in the Super Mini class before getting tangled in a dirt bike origami mess in the final moto. Â This year, Bisceglia, now aboard the 125cc machines, grabbed the Schoolboy 1 class championship.
