It was a hot one at Tomahawk MX Park in Hedgesville, WV last weekend for the 8th race of the 2011 MAMA season. Â Many riders showed up for a weekend in the heat as a few riders, who are bound for Loretta Lynn’s next week, got a great training weekend of getting used to the high heat and humidity. Â MXPTV kept its eyes out on the riders that stood out all weekend long and here they are:
KTM rider Noah Geyer maybe known as the smallest rider on the track in the 50cc classes but it doesn’t mean he can’t hold that throttle wide open! Â Lil’ Noah showed amazing speed for such a small kid as he took the overall win in the 50 Oil 4-8A and 3rd overall in 50B. Â Noah sits in the points lead in both 50B and 50 Oil 4-8A classes in MAMA.
SM2 Racing/Diamond Motorsports/Yamaha rider Coty Schock was on a roll at Tomahawk grabbing perfect overall wins in the 80A 12-15 and Supermini 12-16 classes. Â Schock, who just missed the cut for Loretta Lynn’s this summer, showed that he’s still one fast dude and can hang with the top mini riders. Â He sits 5th in the 80A 12-15 class in MAMA points.
From the young guys to the old, Suzuki rider Joseph Turner was on a roll as well at Tomahawk grabbing two perfect overall wins in the Senior and Super Senior Open classes during Saturday’s action. Â Great starts and consistent rides made it all look easy for the #899 Suzuki. Â In the MAMA points, Turner sits 4th in Super Senior Open and 7th in Senior Open.
The B classes were treated with a double dose of fast talent heading to Loretta Lynn’s next week as MAMA grown Kawasaki rider Scott Clark and New England import Scotty Carpenter duked it out all day long on Sunday in the 250 B and Open B classes. Â The two riders had a huge lead over 3rd each moto and shown great speed on the slippery Tomahawk track.
In the end, Carpenter took the 250 B win with a 2-1 over Clark’s 1-2 and Clark took the Open B win with a 2-1 over Carpenter’s 1-2. Â Even with a drenched 2nd Open B moto and Carpenter going down early, these two were still 1 and 2 out there. Â On Saturday, Clark took the Schoolboy 12-16 4 Stroke overall win and he sits 2nd in Collegeboy, 5th in Open B and Schoolboy 12-16, 11th in 250 B, and the points leader in Unlimited in this year’s MAMA series.
Yamaha rider Kara Groves took the Women’s class overall win with a 3-1 finish at Tomahawk. Â Two holeshots helped her good finishes as this was her first overall win of the 2011 MAMA season. Â Groves is itching to try her hand at the pro level soon! Â She sits 5th in the Women’s class and 9th in Open B in the MAMA series points.
Yamaha rider Chris Hare had a solid weekend at Tomahawk grabbing the 80B 12-15 overall win with a dominating 1-1 sweep. Â Add on a 7th place in Schoolboy 12-16 during Saturday’s action, Hare had a good weekend overall. Â Hare sits 5th in points in the 80B 12-15 class.
Maryland’s Shane Desell will be making another trip to the dude ranch next week and got in some great seat time at Tomahawk in the hot, hot, hot conditions. Â Desell dominated the Junior Mini 7-11 and 80A 9-11 classes (Well, Desell was the only rider in 80A 9-11) but otherwise, no one touched him in Junior Mini 7-11, which had 34 riders. Â Desell sits as the points leader in MAMA in the 80A 9-11 class and 4th in Junior Mini 7-11.
Cobra pilot Owen Pearson seemed to be in another world in the 50A class at Tomahawk. Â His 1-1 sweep was a dominant one and it was his first perfect sweep of the 2011 MAMA season. Â Pearson sits 8th in the 50A points in MAMA currently.
The 250 and Open A classes had small numbers but the talent was deep with names such as Broc Schmelyun, Tyler Wozney, Robert Kraft, Andy Benson, and more lining up to the gate. Â In 250 A, Schmelyun cleaned house with a 1-1 sweep thanks to good starts as SM2 Racing/Bel-Ray rider Tyler Wozney was hot on his heels both motos on his 2000 Honda CR250 two stroke. Â Schmelyun was the only rider aboard a 4 stroke machine as Wozney, Kraft, Benson, and Pete’s Cycles’ TJ Irvin were all on 2 stroke machines.
In Open A, Wozney took the first moto win on his usual Honda CRF450 by a long ways but the 2nd moto would turn out to be a crazy one. Â A brief downpour just 15 minutes before the 2nd Open A moto would change this one up. Â Schmelyun, who took 2nd in moto 1, lead the way in moto 2 through the very slippery Tomahawk track with Wozney not far behind but the gap didn’t change much. Â Then on the white flag lap, Schmelyun went down and Wozney caught up to battle for the lead. Â As the two were neck and neck battling down the new downhill roller section, the two converged going into the corner and both riders went down with Wozney flying off the track. Â The two were left in a kickstarting matchup as third place rider Andy Benson gained ground and would eventually pass both riders for the lead, the moto win, and the overall win in Open A. Â Wozney would get his bike started first but stall out and left kickstarting again as Schmelyun was able to fire his up first and went off to finish 2nd. Â Wozney got the bike started and ended up finishing 6th. Â A crazy end to the Open A class at Tomahawk.
