WOZ UP: The Heart Of My Off SeasonJanuary 20, 2012
Welcome to Woz Up! It’s been nice to take it easy for a month or so to recharge and get ready for the 2012 season. Being able to check out the supercross races on TV and just planning out my year has been occupying most of my time as of late. This past week has been busy thought doing some small DVD projects for the MX Day event, Motocross Vest, and Only One Inspiration. Add that into planning for the year and building websites for clients (Just finished Snake Creek’s new site! CLICK HERE to check it out!), I’m always in front of the monitor either way.
I just released my last video from the MX Day/St. Martin event full with race highlights from that Sunday’s racing action. Make sure to check that out to see more of the track and the riders who competed!
Alli Sports has a new motocross-only YouTube channel. I plan on working with them much more in 2012 so head over there and click subscribe!
No one likes when riders get hurt. Especially severely. This week, there’s been a duo of bad injuries to two awesome riders. Only One Inspiration’s Harold Glissen is always an inspiration to many through his speaking services and just talking to him at the track. He got hurt at the Hog Heaven MX facility in North Carolina as he got tangled with another rider. I just did an in-depth interview with Harold just before he left for North Carolina and he talked a lot about his past and how he got to where he was today.
Another rider in the hospital is Jake Beaudoin, who’s a top amateur motocross athlete from the New England region, as he suffered a severe head injury yesterday while riding. He’s currently in critical condition at the hospital. He has made small progress in the past 24 hours but the battle isn’t over just yet. Best wishes go out to the Beaudoin family in this tough time.
Supercross Thoughts
- 2 rounds in the books and this series continues to be unexpected with already 2 different winners. One being a Kawasaki (Villopoto) and the other a KTM! (Dungey) Yes, a KTM has reached the top step of the supercross podium for the first time ever. It’s so strange that they haven’t been on the top step being that KTM has been on top in all over categories such as off-road, enduro, hare scrambles, GPs, and more. Could that orange bike stay up there and possibly take the title in Vegas?
- Ryan Villopoto is still the one with the target on his back. A freak fall early in the main had him far back in the pack but to come back to 3rd from where he was was astonishing. It goes to show he’s on a different level than anyone else.
- James Stewart still holds that crash or win title with a fall in his main event in Phoenix and resulting in 8th place. The way he’s riding now reminds me of an early Racer X issue cover title: “What’s eating Jeff Emig?” Well…what’s eating JS7?
- Chad Reed didn’t want 5th place last weekend. But he does what he does best: limit the damage. From interviews I’ve read, 4th or lower for Reed is not what he’s looking for.
- The Hahn brothers are both out with injuries this past week. Huge bummer to the most friendly brother duo out there in the sport.
I’m not even going to guess who will top Los Angeles tomorrow night. Why? A 100% chance of rain expected for tomorrow for the LA area is just going to change everything around. Expect the unexpected, as always, tomorrow night!
At MXPTV
The Guess The Podium contest I’ve been running on Saturday before each round has been exciting and so far, no one has won the grand prize. The series has been very unexpected as riders were making their first podium appearances of the season (Musquin/Weimer/Dungey/Wilson) and riders who haven’t made the podium yet (Stewart/Windham/Anderson/Canard/Short). Get your guesses ready for tomorrow morning when another Guess The Podium contest will be up and running!
While on the St. Martin trip I was on last month, I made a long stop at Maho Beach on the Dutch side of the island next door to the airport. It’s the most popular spot on the island as planes from small propeller planes to large 4 engine jets coming in to land just tens of feet over the small beach. Check out the video below:
I had planned to take off this month filming dirt bikes but it looks like it might come to an end on Sunday as I got invite from New Jersey pro Dan Bogdan to check out a popular sand pit in the Garden State. I’ve seen photos from the place and it looks like a lot of fun. So, if the weather holds up, I’ll be there on Sunday filming away.
As far as future filming spots the next month or 2, I’ll be capturing the training action of the 454 Factory camp on February 5th. I’m looking at doing a road trip deal sometime in mid-February all over the east coast that may go up to 2 weeks. Also, I might cover the Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur SX for the 3rd year in a row if things fall into place. A ton of planning going on that’s for sure!
Thanks for reading along this week’s edition of Woz Up!
