WOZ UP: Time To InspireJanuary 13, 2012
Welcome to another edition of Woz Up! This week has been nothing more than anticipation even with Anaheim 1 in the books. A1 did bring exciting racing at times but compared to past A1s, this one I think was a yawner in a way. Obviously, Ryan Villopoto has not lost a single ounce of momentum from last year’s domination. Chad Reed is still in it and was closest to RV1 (even with not liking the track layout). Ryan Dungey gets some much needed orange paint on a supercross podium after some 35+ years for KTM. But wow to the COW (Crash Or Win/Checkers Or Wreckers): James Stewart.
A pair of big mistakes and one landing on an ironically-placed San Manuel tuffblock lead to Stewart to a dismal 6th place to his standards. Bike setup and the juicy “Tiregate” talk going on between James running not just Pirellis but also Dunlop and Bridgestone in his practice sessions wasn’t what I saw that lead to his not-so-great performance. It just looked like that track didn’t allow James to go his full potential. The nightly rising of moisture of Anaheim didn’t make it any easier for JS7 and its always hard to get a setup just right for those conditions just because they are so sudden. Plus a bad start never, ever helps out on a track like that. James trying to push it and move up and just couldn’t. And when he did, he made mistakes. But if you look at RV1′s ride, I wouldn’t blame it totally on the track or is just RV1 that damn good?
The Lites main event was good but wow, Cole Seely. Didn’t see that coming. Well, I guess we should have but that’s what you call under the radar right there. Let’s see if Cole can keep this going for the whole series. But I was really surprised with the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team. As dominant as they were last year, you’d figure their bikes would be up front all night. Dean Wilson didn’t look like the Deano we know from the outdoor championship but hey, it just wasn’t his night. And if I told you that a TLD/Red Bull/Honda would smoke the PC team before A1, you would think I was on crack or Troy Lee himself.
The GEICO Honda team had a really up and down night and eventually, an up and down week this week. Starting off with Eli Tomac. A night that started off very rough for the new #17 having to qualify right out of the LCQ fueled Tomac to come back and snag a podium spot in the main event. It shows that he has plenty of speed and that he really wants that Lites West title after last year’s heart-wrenching loss to it in Vegas. Now to Wil Hahn. An emotional heat race win at A1 had the fan mail piling in on Twitter and all over. His main event didn’t go as planned but was focused to get back up in the points for this weekend’s round at Phoenix. Until……Wil went down while preparing for Phoenix yesterday fracturing his hip. Wil had this similar rough start last year with a back injury before the night program even kicked in at A1. And I’m sure he was happy to get A1 over with it last weekend and focus on the rest of the series. And to have this injury and be out 3-6 weeks (via Honda’s PR) is just a huge bummer for Wil. I had the opportunity to talk and interview Wil at Millville last year and he’s a very fun guy to be around that’s for sure. I know he puts a lot of hard work in and his persona is something no motocross fan can deny. Heal up Wil!
It sure will be exciting tomorrow night in Phoenix now with Honda’s Trey Canard back in action! A multiple main event winner last year, Canard looks forward to shake up the points with a 25-point inverted handicap going into Chase Field Saturday night. Can he come back and get in the thick of the points chase down to Vegas in May?
Tomorrow night’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross round at Phoenix will be one of many live shows on Speed with the action kickstarting at 9:30PM ET.
At MXPTV
It’s been another busy week in January and I’m so proud to still be busy in my “off-season”. I been doing other video projects as well as building websites for Snake Creek MX and MAMA. It may not seem too busy on MXPTV but here at the desk, it’s all buzzing for sure.
If haven’t checked it out, my long-awaited video from the MX Day motocross event on the island of St. Martin is online! It hasn’t garnered much attention (at least to me) but its doing well on the island and around the area as well. I think it shows what the event is all about even with a rough, rocky track that was raced on. Check out the video below of the fun time and more short videos will be posted soon from St. Martin! I’m also producing an event DVD which will include many, many behind the scenes shots and much more racing action along with that.
The year has kicked off very well so far as MXPTV welcomed 2 more sponsors aboard to the site with the Cycle Pro Shop and Only One Inspiration.
Cycle Pro Shop is a new parts and accessories shop located in northern Delaware. Owner Greg King and crew have started from the ground up to provide great deals on parts and accessories from Parts Unlimited, Tucker Rocky, and other distributors. They also do in-house service work and are located conveniently across the street from Blue Diamond MX Park. Check them out online at www.thecycleproshop.com.
Also, Harold Glissen of Only One Inspiration has stepped as a sponsor for the 2012 year at MXPTV. Besides his successful landscaping business in New Jersey, Harold speaks to schools around the state and growing along the east coast about coming over adversity and lately, teaching students about the effects of bullying. Check out Harold’s site at www.onlyoneinspiration.com.
Speaking of Only One Inspiration, I visited Harold Glissen’s garage for a follow up interview to his Rider Session video I did a month ago. Questions were asked through the list of comments to the video and I felt this was a good time to get answers to those questions. Plus I was there doing some other video work for Only One Inspiration. Check out the video below:
I also was trying out my new glass (camera lens) and some camera settings at Snake Creek last Saturday. It was a perfect, sunny day for January. Hell, it could have been perfect for any spring day! It was a great day to shoot that’s for sure! Tyler Kirschner was ripping his new Yamaha YZ125 and he looked really fast. He looks just about right on the bike and I’m sure after a year of getting used to it, 2013 might be a real fast year for the Lil’ Donk. Tyler will be competing one last time on the minis this year and is aiming for a title in the Supermini classes at Loretta Lynn’s. Also at Snake Creek were the regular Delaware crew of Coty Schock, Tyler Wozney borrowing any bike that was offered to him (as he is still working on his ride for this year’s outdoor nationals), Kenny Venarchick, and many others. CLICK HERE to check out the photos from the day.
That’s what’s been going on the past week. Thanks for reading along! I leave you with the most insane track layout I’ve seen in awhile.
